Artist's Description
Mission San Luis Rey is the 18th of the 21 California Missions. It is known as the "King of the Missions" because it is the largest of the California Missions. Currently there are many retreats that take place at this mission, including silent retreats. This painting has a peaceful mood where you can picture yourself walking in solitude down this beautiful hallway and taking a seat on one of the benches to pray. I painted many of these missions in 2011 for a show I had with my wife called Exploring the California Missions. We met really nice people along the way bumping into them at many of the missions. The Woods family was taking their daughter who was in 4th grade to see them. What an experience for her! This painting was done on location in plein air.

Since 1997, I have been working full time as a fine art professional of oil painting in the plein air genre. Taking my easel and paints to the outdoors, setting up and painting what I see. My style has evolved from a more rendering approach to painting with less detail and more brush stroke. Traveling to other cities, states and countries has "broadened my horizon."
